Textbook recommendations and tips

Having textbooks to use while at college isn’t a necessity, but they are very helpful for revision and can add extra information to what you’re taught in your lectures.

💚 The ‘Pink’ book (now white) aka the BSAVA textbook of veterinary nursing. This book is like the bible of vet nursing and has everything you need to know from A&P to Theatre Practice to Radiology to OSCEs. It’s a little on the pricey side if you get it brand new, but it’s worth it. However you can usually find some second hand ones for a much lower price.

💚 Victoria Aspinall introduction to Anatomy and Physiology. I personally find it beneficial to have different sources of information to revise from. When things are worded differently I find it can help me understand things a bit better. There is also a work book to go with this; again a great tool for revision.

💚 Saunders veterinary anatomy colouring book. I’m a very visual learner and I love getting creative so this was great.

💚 The CAW 300 MCQ books. These are available in various topics and are fantastic for mock questions! I’d take mine into work and have colleagues test me

💚Another great book for mock questions is the Veterinary Nursing self-assessment Q&A’s.

💚For other topics, a couple of ‘go-to’ books I used were the Veterinary technicians handbook of Laboratory Procedures and Anaesthesia for veterinary nurses.

💚And for use in practice the BSAVA Pocketbook for veterinary nurses is a brilliant tool. It has calculations, emergency drugs, x-ray positions and more!

✨ Text book tips ✨

💚If you’re like me and don’t like writing in your books, whether it’s notes of highlighting, you can get translucent post-it notes!

💚 Utilise your books! A lot of books come with extra resources, often online. For example the Aspinall A&P book has matching games and quizzes to test your knowledge.

💚 Struggle to concentrate when reading large amounts of text? Use the Speechify app! It’s free to download and allows you to scan text onto your phone and it will read it aloud for you.

I have used a few other books as well as those listed and these are tonnes more available, but these are the ones I found just that little bit more useful ☺️
